Costa Rica Adventure – 2011

Been planning a trip to Costa Rica since 2009!  The Great Recession has granted an extension on this process.  Now 2011 looks like the year.  Why Costa Rica?  Several have asked that question.  And there are several answers:

  • Opportunity to learn about a different culture
  • Quest for adventure
  • Geographically diverse
  • Tropical climate
  • Abundant wildlife
  • Stable democratic country
  • Family vacation

Where is Costa Rica? As you can see by the map, it is located in Central America between Nicaragua and Panama – and not too far from the equator.  You’d think that location would produce a hot tropical climate.  This is only partially true.  Thanks to a mountain range that traverses the spine of the country, several locations in Costa Rica boast “perpetual” spring-like conditions.  One example of this type of area is Monteverde  – a jungle in the clouds!  Cool, misty and bursting with wildlife, this area is definitely on the itinerary.  Another “cool” spot is the city of Heredia, located in the central valley not far from San Jose, the country’s capital.  The guide book indicates temperatures in the 70’s during the day and 50’s/60’s at night – ALL YEAR.  At the other end of the spectrum the coastal jungle areas “down south” are hot, humid and during the summer when we are going, very rainy.  All three guide books that I’ve read agree  – BRING YOUR RAIN GEAR!  OK, I heard that and L.L Bean has responded.
